Delhi’s chief minister, Rekha Gupta, announced that scientists have successfully tested cloud‑seeding trials in the Burari area. If the weather stays right, the city could see its first artificial rain on October 29—a first step toward using technology to fight Delhi’s choking air pollution.
Gupta posted the news on her X account. She said, “Preparations for cloud seeding are complete. Experts tested the system in Burari, and the weather department predicts cloud cover on the 28th, 29th, and 30th.” She added that this milestone “could establish a scientific method to clean Delhi’s air.”
The announcement comes after the city’s air‑quality index (AQI) fell 50 points in a single day following a tough winter enforcement drive. “Delhi’s AQI is now 305, nearly 50 points lower than yesterday’s 353. The city is responding to swift, coordinated action,” said Senior Citizen Samir, a top cabinet official.
Samir urged agencies to keep the momentum. “Around 2,000 teams are working day and night, and we’re not just focusing on winter. Our governance model is 24/7, data‑driven, and citizen‑centric,” he said. The plan includes adding 70 more mechanised sweepers, 70 anti‑smog guns, water sprinklers, and 140 litter‑picking machines across 1,440 km of roads.
The government is also preparing for future challenges. “We’re partnering with IIT Kanpur and the IMD for the next cloud‑seeding rounds,” Samir announced. He highlighted the “Comprehensive Enforcement Deployment” that deploys 970+ personnel for dust and construction monitoring. Sites larger than 500 sqm are under strict GPS‑tracked supervision by city bodies.
Open‑burning control has seen notable gains. “Over 1,200 personnel are patrolled in 443 teams to curb garbage, leaf, and biomass burning,” Samir revealed. The three‑decker approach—MCD, DDA, and the Revenue Department—ensures rigorous daily reporting through the Green War Room.
Delhi’s push now combines immediate AQI improvements with long‑term climate innovation. The impending artificial rain on October 29 could mark a significant win in the city’s ongoing battle against air pollution.
