Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh – The state’s capital saw a lively start to a memorial motorcycle ride that honors the 63rd anniversary of Walong Day. On Friday, Lt. General (Retd.) K.T. Parnaik, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, kicked off the former-itineraries from Raj Bhavan as a rally of 21 riders heads toward the historic battlefield of Walong.
The 9‑day journey moves from Tawang to Walong, tracing the route used during the 1962 war. Eleven riders in army uniforms and ten civilians from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam will pedal across remote high‑altitude roads, reflecting on the bravery of the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Walong.
Governor Parnaik praised the Army’s 3 Corps for organizing the event and thanked the riders for keeping the battle’s legacy alive. He highlighted how the rough road trip not only tests endurance but also stands as a tribute to the Indian Army’s courage and resilience.
“It’s a bold journey for everyone involved,” he said, recalling how local villagers supported troops during the 1962 conflict. “Your path will strengthen bonds between civilians and the armed forces, and reinforce the Afghan‑ist power of patriotism in the region.”
The governor urged riders to stop in towns along the route to talk with local youth. He encouraged them to inspire possible military careers and to celebrate Arunachal’s growth in tourism and development.
He also called on fans of the ride to shine a light on health matters: say a word on drug abuse, highlight tuberculosis awareness, and promote cleanliness and education.
The ceremony was attended by key Army officials: Col. R. Ganesh of the 10 MAHAR Command, Major Priyhersh, the expedition’s nodal officer, Brig. K. Jayashankar of the 117 Mountain Brigade, and Brig. H. Bhattacharya from the BRO. The event set a spirited tone for the march ahead.
