In New Delhi, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has urged political rivals to watch the ruling BJP closely after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of “vote theft.” Owaisi told that while he can’t speak for Rahul or the Congress, the opposition must keep the BJP’s every move under scrutiny.
He warned that the BJP is a formidable opponent. “If we let our guard down, they will do what they do best,” Owaisi said. “The voter lists must be checked carefully – check the names, check for duplicates, and make sure the rolls are accurate.” He recalled fighting duplicate entries in his own constituency back in 2009 and 2014.
Gandhi has held two press conferences exposing alleged manipulation of voter lists. In August, he cited the Mahadevapura area of Bangalore, claiming over 100,000 entries were wrong or duplicated, while in September he slammed Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar for allegedly covering up attempts to delete voters from the Aland Assembly in Karnataka.
At the same time, Owaisi has criticized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. He says the rapid roll‑update left many voters’ names removed without proper checks. “If people whose names were deleted don’t check, you’ll see chaos on polling day,” Owaisi warned. The AIMIM unit in Bihar, led by Akhtarul Iman, has even taken the issue to the Supreme Court.
Bihar will hold elections in two phases on 6 and 11 November, with results announced on 14 November. The Election Commission said the final roster now has 7.42 crore electors, down from 7.89 crore in June after the SIR audit. Owaisi said 6.5 million names were initially removed; an extra 350,000 have been scrubbed since then.
The SIR process, critics say, should not have rushed through the state’s huge rural population. Owaisi insists that checking citizenship is the Ministry of Home Affairs’ job, not that of election officials. He adds that the Election Commission’s hurried approach could spark problems on the day elections open.
