Ashok Gehlot criticises Raj govt on ‘removal’ of tribal history from school textbook

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has slammed the state government for trying to wipe out the inspiring history of tribal communities from school textbooks. He called it a “shameful” move that ignores the brave legacy of tribals in India’s freedom struggle.

Gehlot targeted the recent removal of the Mangarh Dham chapter from Class 4 textbooks. Mangarh Dham is a sacred site where tribal leaders fought against British rule in the early 1900s. “This isn’t just forgetting a lesson—it’s deliberately erasing tribal history,” Gehlot said in a statement on Thursday. He shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the BJP government has shown zero respect for tribal identity since taking power.

This isn’t the first time, Gehlot pointed out. The BJP earlier cut the story of Kalibai, a young tribal girl who gave her life to fight for education and awareness among marginalized groups. “These changes aren’t random. They show a bigger plan to hide the courage and sacrifices of tribal heroes,” he said. “But tribal stories are too strong to vanish with a simple edit.”

Gehlot stressed how vital tribal contributions are to India’s story. “Their role in the freedom movement and social change is etched in our nation’s heart. No party can mess with that for votes,” he added.

He demanded that the BJP apologize to tribal communities right away and bring back the chapters on Mangarh Dham, Kalibai, and other tribal icons to school syllabi. “Restore these stories now,” Gehlot urged, calling it an “unacceptable act.”

Tribal history and education reforms have sparked debates in Rajasthan, with many voicing support for keeping these chapters to honor unsung heroes.
