Guwahati, Nov 13 – Assam’s Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved a bundle of new projects and policies this Thursday to boost the state’s roads, sports, rivers and family life.
Roads and bridges get a big push
The Cabinet cleared Rs 3,217 crore for the Asom Mala 3.0 plan. The plan will upgrade 883 km of highways and add 36 new bridges in 34 districts. Officials say the work will link rural villages to cities, speed up trade and help local businesses grow.
Sports gets a facelift
A fresh Rs 765 crore will fund the overhaul of the historic RG Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati. The redevelopment will turn the venue into a top‑class, multi‑sport arena, including a 25,000‑seater, FIFA Category 2 football stadium. The state hopes the upgrade will put Assam on the map for regional and international sports events.
Protecting riverbanks
A new Community‑Led Riverbank Protection Policy was approved to tackle erosion and flooding that often hit the Brahmaputra and other rivers. The policy invites local communities to give up small pieces of land for embankment work, speeding up construction and keeping residents safer.
Other key approvals
- The government will publish the full report of the 1983 Commission of Enquiry on Assam Disturbances (Tribhuvan Prasad Tewary Commission) in the next Legislative Assembly session.
- The “Matri Pitri Vandana” package gives state employees special casual leave to spend time with parents and elders. Employees can choose leave from July 9–12 or July 23–26, 2026.
Chief Minister Sarma said the Cabinet’s decisions reflect Assam’s focus on modern infrastructure, strong sports culture, safer rivers and tighter family bonds. The moves aim to spark growth across the state while keeping people’s lives and heritage in balance.
