Guwahati – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an NHIDCL executive on Wednesday after a sting operation exposed a bribe scheme in Assam.
The detainee, Maisnam Riten Kumar Singh, is the Executive Director and Regional Officer of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Guwahati branch. Officials say he accepted ₹10 lakh (about $12,000) from a private company in return for a favourable completion certificate and an extension of time for a four‑lane highway project on National Highway‑37 between Demow and the Moran Bypass.
The sting took place on October 14. Law‑enforcement agents caught Singh handling the cash in front of a company representative linked to the project. A second arrest followed when the private individual involved was also taken into custody.
Later, the CBI also seized three days of unaccounted cash worth ₹2.62 crore from Singh’s home, as part of a broader search at six residential and seven office sites across India. Investigators have identified several of Singh’s assets – nine landed properties and 20 apartments nationwide – along with high‑end vehicles registered under his name.
The CBI will present both Singh and the private party to the Special Judge, CBI Cases, Guwahati court later this week.
This case highlights rising concerns over corruption in India’s infrastructure sector, especially in high‑profile highway projects. The CBI’s swift action demonstrates the agency’s commitment to tackling bribery and ensuring public funds are used properly.
