Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma arrived in New Delhi on Saturday evening to honor the late singer Zubeen Garg. Early Sunday morning, he received Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains at Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 4. Around 12:55 a.m., Sarma placed a floral wreath and a traditional gamocha on the coffin holding the embalmed body.
Union Minister Pabitra Margherita joined Sarma, along with senior officials from Assam and the central government, plus many fans and admirers. They all paid their respects with flowers. Before lifting the coffin, the group sang Zubeen Garg’s popular song “Mayabini” together—just as the singer had once asked people to do after his passing.
The remains arrived from Singapore on Air India Flight AI 2116, then switched to a special chartered flight headed to Guwahati. Zubeen Garg, the beloved Assamese singer and cultural icon known as the voice of millions, drowned on Friday while swimming at Lazarus Island in Singapore. He was 52 and had traveled there for the North East India Festival.
On Sunday, fans can pay their last respects at Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati. From Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, the coffin will head straight to Zubeen’s home in Kharghuli. Sarma urged his legions of admirers to stay away from the residence, giving the family— including his wife and father—some private time to grieve.
Assam declared three days of state mourning from September 20 to 22 for the tragic death of this iconic singer and music composer. Officials canceled all entertainment, ceremonies, and public events, though essential services like Sewa Saptah continue. Only benefit-distribution programs got postponed.
News of Zubeen Garg’s death cast a deep shadow over Assam and beyond. Shops shut down across Guwahati and other areas, as people paused their daily lives to remember the heartthrob who touched so many hearts with his music.
