Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared big news on Monday about the ongoing investigation into the death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg. The Assam government has asked the Ministry of Home Affairs to activate the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore. This move aims to get full help from Singaporean officials in the probe, including access to key case details and bringing back any suspects for justice.
In a post on X, Sarma wrote: “The Govt of Assam has submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen. Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities—giving us access to case details and assistance to bring back the accused and secure justice.”
Talking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma stressed that the next two to three days are critical. “Our Assam police team is already in Singapore,” he said. “Once the Ministry sends the request, we’ll move forward much faster.”
A top Assam police official revealed that Shyamkanu Mahanta, the main organizer of the North East India Festival, is hiding out in Singapore. Look-out notices have gone out for Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen Garg’s manager, over their links to the singer’s death. Both men must show up at the CID office in Guwahati by October 6.
Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh assured everyone that the investigation by the CID and Special Investigation Team (SIT) will stay transparent and thorough, following the Chief Minister’s orders. “One team is in Delhi right now, and another is heading to Singapore,” Singh said. “The MLAT process is underway. I urge the people of Assam to trust the police—we’ve made progress in the last seven days, and we’ll wrap this up soon. Let’s stick to the legal process and support the team.”
Zubeen Garg, a superstar in Assamese music, died on September 19 in Singapore after what authorities called a drowning incident. His body arrived in Delhi first, then flew to Guwahati on a commercial flight on September 21, where fans mourned his loss. As the Assam police push ahead with the Zubeen Garg death probe, many hope for quick answers and accountability.
