NHRC Takes Action on Assault on Assam Journalist Near Lumding
In a swift move, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped in after a shocking assault on a journalist in Assam. The incident happened on September 7 near Lumding Railway Institute, where media person Sujit Sarkar, also known as Hari, was brutally attacked by a group of around 20 anti-social elements while heading home from work around midnight.
According to reports, the attackers not only beat him badly but also robbed him of his gold chain, mobile phone, watch, and even his motorcycle. Police rushed to the scene, rescued Sarkar, and rushed him to Lumding Civil Hospital for treatment. They managed to detain two suspects for questioning, and an FIR has been filed at the local police station. Right now, a full investigation is underway to catch the culprits.
The NHRC spotted the story in a news portal on September 9 and took suo motu cognisance, meaning they acted on their own without any formal complaint. They see this as a major human rights violation if the details check out. To get to the bottom of it, the commission has sent a notice to the Director General of Police in Assam, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
Sarkar himself has raised alarms about his safety and is pushing authorities to register a strong case against the attackers for quick legal action. The Lumding Press Club and local people have condemned the violence, calling for tough punishment for the guilty and better protection for journalists in the area.
Adding a twist, there are counter-claims that the journalist was under the influence of alcohol during the attack. As the probe continues, everyone is watching closely to see justice served in this alarming case of journalist assault in Assam.
