Guwahati – Dec 2
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma explained on Tuesday that the state’s policing has changed dramatically, moving from a time when police stations lacked basic infrastructure and people were hesitant to visit, to a new age of modern facilities and stronger public confidence.
Posting on X, Sarma noted that law‑enforcement in Assam has evolved quickly in recent years, thanks to steady government support for upgrading equipment and a commitment to making policing more citizen‑friendly.
“From an era when police infrastructure was in shambles, and people were reluctant to visit Thanas to an era when police officials have modern infrastructure and people have a friendly police force to trust, Assam has travelled a long way in a very short time,” he wrote.
He said the transformation is part of a larger push by his administration to fortify internal security and to make government institutions more open and accountable. Over the last few years, the state has added tech‑savvy police stations, upgraded forensic labs, new motor vehicles and better housing for officers. Officials believe these changes have played a key role in reshaping how the public views the police.
Sarma’s comments come amid a wave of reforms the state has been championing, from digitalising service delivery to boosting the number of women in the force. The launch of citizen‑service centres, online FIR filing, and enhanced communication networks have helped close the gap between police and the community.
Observers see Sarma’s focus on trust as a core part of Assam’s governance story, especially as law and order remains a hot topic in politics. Recent statistics show decreases in certain crime types and faster response times in both urban and rural areas.
The government is also expanding training centres and creating specialized units to tackle emerging threats such as cybercrime, drug trafficking, and border issues. With modernization at the forefront, Sarma stresses the aim is to build a police system that is efficient yet attuned to citizens’ needs.
