Guwahati, Oct. 22 – The Assam Rifles rolled out a coordinated counter‑insurgency effort across the Northeast, stopping a string of attacks by militant groups on security personnel in the past weeks.
The banned United Liberation Front of Assam‑Independent (ULFA‑I) and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim K (NSCN‑K YA) were found to be behind the recent strikes in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
On Oct. 16, NSCN‑K YA militants tried to take over the Hindma Camp in Changlang District, South Arunachal. Flying flat, the troops tackled the standoff and shut the attack down before it could spread. The very next day, Oct. 17, ULFA‑I fighters targeted the Kakopathar Camp in Tinsukia, Assam. Quick‑reaction forces struck back, inflicting heavy losses on the attackers and detaining an over‑ground worker involved in the plot.
The Assam Rifles strengthened its operations by activating a comprehensive counter‑insurgency grid. Modern drones, surveillance units, and intelligence‑driven teams were deployed across the region. This intensified push culminated in a fierce ambush on Oct. 21 at 6‑Mile Lekang Khampti in Namsai District, South Arunachal. Local troops neutralised a ULFA‑I cadre and recovered weapons, including a rifle, a rocket‑propelled grenade (RPG) round, and three rucksacks.
During the sweep, investigators found a dead body – identified as Iwon Axom, a self‑styled Sergeant Major of ULFA‑I – along with the seized gear. The close‑quarters engagement and swift takedown sent a clear message to insurgent networks that their operations are now under tight scrutiny.
These rapid, decisive actions have not only disrupted the insurgents’ plans but also boosted morale among security forces. The groups are now on the run, their networks broken and leaders under pressure.
The Assam Rifles’ steadfast planning and tough execution underscore its role as the “Sentinels of the North East,” ensuring peace and stability in this volatile region.
