Assam’s Kaziranga National Park reopens for 2025–26 tourist season

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam kicked off its 2025-26 tourism season on Friday, welcoming back visitors to one of India’s top wildlife spots. As the country’s seventh UNESCO World Heritage Site, the park invites adventure seekers to explore its stunning landscapes and spot iconic animals like the one-horned rhinoceros, tigers, elephants, and a variety of birds.

Park Director Sonali Ghosh shared her excitement, noting how tourists can now dive into the park’s rich biodiversity. She highlighted Kaziranga’s strong focus on wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism, and involving local communities to keep the area thriving.

The park typically opens from October through mid-May each year. It closes during the monsoon season from June to September when heavy rains flood its vast grasslands and forests. This year’s opening ceremony took place at the Western Range in Bagori, drawing a crowd of dignitaries. Local MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from the Kaziranga Lok Sabha seat, MLA Mrinal Saikia from Khumtai, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Vinay Gupta, Nagaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma, and other officials joined the event.

Festivities started with a traditional puja to bless the park and launch the safari season. Highlights included a Pushpanjali tribute to popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg and the rollout of a REC CSR initiative to upgrade solar-powered drinking water systems at 120 anti-poaching camps across Kaziranga.

Tourism numbers hit a record high last season, with 406,564 visitors flocking to the park in 2024-25, including 17,693 from abroad—that’s about 4.5% of the total. Ghosh pointed out that overall visitors have quadrupled over the past decade, thanks to fresh initiatives boosting eco-tourism. “Kaziranga’s seeing a real surge in interest, especially from international travelers,” she said.

The park also saw its revenue jump 21.19% in the 2024-25 fiscal year compared to the previous one, earning over Rs 10.90 crore versus Rs 8.81 crore. Spanning districts like Golaghat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Biswanath, Kaziranga continues to draw global attention for its unique one-horned rhinos and conservation efforts.
