Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader in West Bengal, tore up the police chain after a BJP MP was attacked.
The Deputy Chief Minister’s anger grew when he visited the wounded MP, Khagen Murmu, in a hospital in Siliguri. He told the police chief, DGP Rajeev Kumar, to “pack your bags, Delhi is calling.”
“For the next state election in 2026, we will bring the baton to the BJP, and if they win we will win in 24 hours,” Adhikari told reporters. He singled out the Jalpaiguri SP, Sri Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat, and the DGP for immediate transfer to the capital. The Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, has already requested a forensic report from the West Bengal government.
Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju echoed the urgency. “Submit a report now or face legal action,” he said to the local press.
Khagen Murmu is still in the ICU. He suffered a facial injury and a fractured bone below his eye. Doctors will perform surgery soon, the MP’s spokesperson said.
“In a bid to quash dissent, Mamata Banerjee’s men inflicted these injuries on BJP workers,” Adhikari added. “The spirit of the supporters remains unbroken, and we’ll help them recover.”
The attack struck in Nagrakata, Jalpaiguri district, while Khagen Murmu and fellow BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were on their way to aid people affected by a landslide. The MP was rushed to a health centre, then to a Siliguri hospital. The BJP lodged a complaint against eight suspects at the local police station and staged a protest, but no arrests have been made.
The incident has raised questions about police accountability and the safety of opposition leaders in West Bengal. As the 2026 Assembly polls approach, the political stakes have never been higher.
