On Tuesday, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose issued a 24‑hour deadline for the state police to arrest those who attacked BJP parliamentarian Khagen Murmu and party whip Shankar Ghosh. The governor said he would take further action if the police failed to act within that time.

The violence happened in Bamundanga, Jalpaiguri district, while Murmu and Ghosh were driving relief supplies to residents hit by rain‑induced landslides. The attack left Murmu badly hurt; he is now being treated at a hospital in Siliguri, Darjeeling district. After visiting the hospital, the governor spoke with reporters and reaffirmed that the police must follow constitutional rules. He warned that repeated attacks on elected officials threaten West Bengal’s democratic fabric.

At present, police have not arrested anyone linked to the incident, even though the BJP filed a complaint against eight suspects at the Nagrakata police station on Monday night and staged a protest outside the station demanding swift action. Police officials said they are still investigating the case.
