Bengaluru, Oct 7 – A shocking incident at India’s Supreme Court last week left many stunned when an elderly man tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai. The act broke the silence of the courtroom, but the judge calmly finished the hearing and called for calm.
The man, later identified as Kishore Rakesh, was arrested on the spot. He shouted about “Sanatan” before the shoe missed the bench. Security cameras captured the moment, and investigators are questioning him about his motives.
#### Strong condemnation from Karnataka’s top officials
Home Minister G. Parameshwara spoke to reporters in Bengaluru and warned that such attacks could not happen again. “The chief justice is a proud Dalit leader who has reached the highest office,” he said. “His dignity and the integrity of the Supreme Court must be protected.”
Parameshwara urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take action and enforce stronger security at the apex court. He also demanded that Rakesh be brought to trial immediately, criticizing the release of “this lawyer who should have been arrested.”
#### Political leaders rally behind the court
B.Y. Vijayendra, state BJP president and MLA, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the attempt to insult the Chief Justice was “unforgivable” and a threat to the Constitution. “His shameful act attacks the very foundation of our democracy,” he said.
#### Why the attack happened
The incident came after a heated debate over a public‑interest case about restoring a damaged Lord Vishnu idol in Khajuraho. Gavai had dismissed a petition and commented, “Go and ask the deity himself to do something,” a remark that was widely shared on social media and misinterpreted by some. Gavai later clarified that he respects all religions.
#### Current status
Kishore Rakesh is now being questioned by law‑enforcement agencies. The Supreme Court has tightened its security measures. The judicial system remains calm, and sessions will resume with the usual checks in place.
The event serves as a reminder of the need to protect the sanctity of India’s constitutional institutions and the people who uphold them.
