Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to bring big changes to Mizoram with his visit on September 13. Railway officials are excited about the new Bairabi-Sairang Railway Project, which will finally connect Aizawl to the rest of India by train. For years, people in Mizoram dreamed of easy rail travel, and now it’s becoming reality.
KK Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of the North East Frontier Railway, shared the good news with . “PM Modi is gifting the people of Mizoram this new railway line— the first one linking Aizawl to other parts of the country,” Sharma said. He’s also launching three new trains to make travel smoother: the Rajdhani Express from Sairang to Delhi’s Anand Vihar Terminal, a Sairang-Guwahati Express for quick trips to Assam, and a Sairang-Kolkata Express to connect directly with West Bengal’s capital. Locals are thrilled, with an atmosphere of joy as their long wait ends.
This railway won’t just be for passengers— it will help goods trains too. Sharma explained that cheaper transport could lower market prices and boost the local economy. Farmers will find it easier to send agricultural and horticultural produce to other states, while students studying away from home can travel more affordably. Tourism in Mizoram is also set to get a lift, drawing more visitors to the scenic hills.
Looking ahead, the line might extend even further. Sharma mentioned an ongoing survey to push the tracks toward the Myanmar border, opening up new trade and travel opportunities.
Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity at the Railway Board, added that this fits into a larger plan to link all state capitals by rail. “With the Bairabi-Sairang line complete, Aizawl joins the national railway map,” he said. PM Modi’s inauguration will kick off various services, benefiting Mizoram’s economy and cultural ties.
Modi’s trip is part of a busy schedule from September 13 to 15, covering Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar. The Prime Minister’s Office announced he’ll inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects worth Rs 71,850 crore across these states.
In Aizawl, starting around 10 am, Modi will launch development initiatives worth over Rs 9,000 crore in sectors like railways, roadways, energy, and sports. Besides the trains, he’ll flag off the new rail services and address a public gathering.
On the roads front, expect upgrades like the Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road. A key highlight is the Chhimtuipui River Bridge on the Lawngtlai-Siaha Road, promising all-weather access and cutting travel time by two hours.
For sports enthusiasts, Modi will lay the foundation for the Khelo India Multipurpose Indoor Hall to nurture young talent. In energy, a new 30 TMTPA LPG Bottling Plant at Mualkhang in Aizawl will strengthen supplies in the region.
This visit marks a game-changer for Mizoram’s connectivity and growth, making life easier for everyone from farmers to tourists.
