India’s Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, cheered on the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Sunday after the group dominated student elections at the University of Hyderabad (UoH). ABVP scooped up every major post in the Hyderabad University Students Union (HUSU), including president, vice president, general secretary, joint secretary, sports secretary, and cultural secretary.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Kumar celebrated the win as a sign that UoH’s Gen Z crowd backs ABVP’s vision. “Hearty congratulations to @ABVPVoice on a historic victory in the University of Hyderabad,” he wrote. “From president to cultural secretary, every key position is now ours.” Kumar highlighted this as part of a growing “saffron wave” in campus politics, pointing to recent ABVP triumphs at Panjab University and Delhi University. “This clean sweep shows the trust Gen Z places in nationalist ideas,” he added. “From Punjab to DU to UoH, campus after campus, we’re turning momentum into a real mandate.”
Leading the charge at UoH is Siva Palepu, a PhD student in animal biology, who takes the president’s spot. Debendra, another PhD scholar, steps up as vice president. Shruti Priya, pursuing a PhD in economics, grabs general secretary. MBA student Saurabh Shukla wins joint secretary, while Venus, in an integrated MA program for language sciences, becomes cultural secretary. Jwala, a PhD student in Hindi, rounds out the team as sports secretary.
This UoH sweep builds on ABVP’s strong showing earlier this month at Delhi University. There, ABVP’s Aryan Maan claimed the students’ union presidency by a landslide, beating Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidate Joslyn Nandita Choudhary by 16,000 votes. Maan pulled in 28,821 votes, while Choudhary got 12,645. The Left-supported All India Students Association-Students’ Federation of India (AISA-SFI) candidate Anjali came in third with 5,385 votes.
At Delhi University, NSUI’s Rahul Jhansla snagged the vice president role, but ABVP held onto secretary and joint secretary. These student union elections spotlight rising support for ABVP across major Indian universities, fueling talk of a shifting tide in youth politics.
