Kolkata, Nov. 15 – West Bengal police say they arrested a Bangladeshi man on Friday night in the Haldibari area of Cooch Behar district. The 28‑year‑old, identified as Durjoy Roy, allegedly tried to leave India back to Bangladesh after West Bengal’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list began earlier this month.
Police reports say Durjoy had entered India illegally about four years ago and worked in hotels and tea gardens. He also says he obtained an Aadhaar card and a PAN card with forged documents. When local residents noticed him roaming near Sinjarhat on Friday, they reported him to authorities.
The Dewanganj Out Post responded quickly. When questioned, Durjoy confirmed he was from Mardia village, Sirajganj district, Bangladesh. Police detained him and took him to their post. They seized a mobile phone, his Aadhaar card, PAN card, a bank ATM card, and some cash.
During the interview, Durjoy told reporters that he had “come for a visit” four years ago, denied illegal entry, but admitted he had tried to cross the India‑Bangladesh border at night to return home as pressure from the SIR process grew. He was caught before he could reach the border.
Officials warn that many people in West Bengal’s border districts have attempted to cross into Bangladesh after the voter list revision began. The case highlights ongoing concerns about illegal immigration, fake identity documents, and the safety of the India‑Bangladesh border.
