Bank fraud case: CBI arrests four accused from Maharashtra after 15 years

In a big win for India’s fight against bank fraud, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has finally caught four family members who dodged the law for 15 long years. These accused, declared absconders by a special court back in 2009, were nabbed from Maharashtra over the weekend, a CBI official shared on Monday.

The suspects—Rajkumar Churewal, Madhav Churewal, Dipak Churewal, and Rajesh Churewal—come from the same family and hail from Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. The CBI had even announced a Rs 1 lakh reward for tips on their whereabouts, showing just how determined they were to track them down.

Here’s the twist: While hiding from justice, these fugitives didn’t stop their shady dealings. They grabbed a fresh loan from the Bank of India using fake identities and then defaulted on it, as the CBI revealed. To stay under the radar, they forged government IDs with made-up names, making it tough for investigators to find them.

The cases go back to 2004 and 2007, when the CBI’s Kolkata unit filed charges for bank fraud. Rajkumar and Madhav got declared absconders in 2010, while Dipak and Rajesh followed in the 2007 case. Sadly, another family member, Surendra Kumar Churewal, who was also an absconder, has passed away.

Fresh clues about their fake names and hideouts led to a coordinated raid by CBI’s Economic Offences Branch in Kolkata on Sunday. Teams swooped in and arrested Rajkumar, Madhav, and Dipak from two spots in Nagpur, plus Rajesh from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. They’re set to appear in a Kolkata court soon.

The CBI isn’t done yet—they’re filing a new case with state police for charges like cheating by impersonation and forgery. This arrest highlights how the agency keeps chasing down bank fraud culprits, no matter how long it takes. Stay tuned for updates on this Maharashtra bank fraud case.
