Before 2026 polls Trinamool to partially implement ‘one person, one post’ within party
In the lead-up to next year’s 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls, the Trinamool Congress is rolling out a partial “one person, one post” rule at the grassroots level of its leadership. A party insider shared this update, highlighting how the move aims to streamline roles within the organization.
A state cabinet member, speaking anonymously, clarified that this change targets councillors in urban civic bodies, such as municipal corporations and municipalities. Under the new plan, these elected officials won’t be able to hold any party organizational positions in the same ward or even the same district.
A senior TMC leader explained the reasoning: It helps dodge conflicts of interest that arise when one person juggles both a councillor’s duties and party roles. “We’ve seen how splitting focus like that often means neither job gets done well,” the leader said. “This setup clears up those issues and lets people concentrate on their main responsibilities.”
The idea of “one person, one post” first gained traction a few years back, thanks to pushes from party general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee. Back then, senior leaders resisted a full rollout across all levels, arguing it wouldn’t fit everywhere. But now, after an internal survey, the party brass is enforcing it strictly in urban areas like municipal corporations and municipalities.
Lately, Abhishek Banerjee has been busy meeting district leaders one-on-one. In six districts, they’ve picked fresh faces as presidents for town and block levels. These new appointees will lead the party’s youth, women, and workers’ wings. The party announced these changes on social media just recently, signaling a fresh start for grassroots leadership in West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress.
