Kolkata, December 2 – The West Bengal chapter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced plans to stage a large rally in the Matua‑heavy area of Thakurnagar, which falls under the Bangaon subdivision of North 24 Parganas, on December 6.
The main goal of the event is to challenge the continuous messaging from the ruling Trinamool Congress that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by the Election Commission of India (ECI) will strip Matua voters of their voting rights, a claim the BJP says would ultimately jeopardise their citizenship.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee delivered an anti‑SIR rally in Bangaon on November 25, where she tried to stir fear among the Matua community—a socially disadvantaged Hindu group that migrated from Bangladesh to West Bengal as refugees.
Matuas make up a significant portion of the electorate in the two Bangladesh‑border districts of North 24 Parganas and Nadia.
Since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, a sizable slice of Matua voters has consistently backed the BJP in every contest.
The highlight of the BJP’s Thakurnagar rally will be the appearance of megastar Mithun Chakraborty, who joined the party before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls.
Bikash Ghosh, the district president for the Bangaon Lok Sabha seat, told reporters on Tuesday that the rally will kick off at 3 p.m.
He added, “A procession will start in front of Thakurnagar Hospital and will end at Thakurnagar Market. Besides, Mithun Chakraborty, our State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya, and the party Lok Sabha member from Bangaon and Union Minister, Shantanu Thakur, will be leading the rally.”
The Trinamool Congress, however, branded the BJP’s plan as a reactive move to the successful rally held by Mamata Banerjee in Bangaon on November 25.
