Kolkata – The West Bengal government said Thursday that it is moving the Cooch Behar district police superintendent, Dyutiman Bhattacharya, after a video showed him fighting his neighbours during the night of Kali Puja and Diwali.
On Monday, Bhattacharya burst out of his bungalow when the sounds of firecrackers from nearby homes angered his pet dog. The clip, which quickly went viral, shows Bhattacharya and several aides rushing outside and assaulting the residents. He claimed he was simply protesting the loud crackers. Police and the state government say the assault was unacceptable.
In a notification released on Thursday, the state announced Bhattacharya’s transfer to a lower‑profile post as commandant of the third battalion of the State Armed Police. He will be replaced by Sandeep Karra, the deputy commissioner of the West zone in the Asansol‑Durgapur Police Commissionerate. The new deputy commissioner will be Sonawane Kuldip Suresh, who is currently the special superintendent of the Intelligence Branch of the West Bengal Police.
The state said the move was routine, but insiders say Bhattacharya’s conduct on Kali Puja embarrassed officials and prompted the swift decision.
Other firecracker‑related incidents are also shaking the city. An elderly woman in south Kolkata’s Bhawanipur area reported that five men beat her after she objected to late‑night fireworks on Kali Puja. The police refused to file a complaint the first time because it was a festival night, but when she returned with a lawyer on Thursday a First Information Report (FIR) was lodged. No arrests have been made yet.
Meanwhile, resident Anupama Chowdhury said that youths had been lighting firecrackers at about 1:30 a.m. on Kali Puja, well beyond the permitted hours. The West Bengal police are actively probing these incidents as the country prepares for the upcoming Diwali celebrations.
