A Customs officer in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district was violently assaulted in a shocking incident. The attack came after a minor road collision between the officer’s car and an autorickshaw in Sonarpur on Saturday.
The driver, along with about 55 people, broke into the officer’s house at night. They forced the gate open, entered the property and beat the Customs officer, smashing his head. The officer, who needed stitches, called the police repeatedly, but help didn’t arrive for about 40 minutes.
CCTV footage shows the group entering the house one after another, then attacking the officer. He reported that his wife was also harassed inside her home.
Police opened a case and arrested one suspect. Investigators are searching for the rest of the attackers. A senior officer said investigations are underway and that more arrests are likely.
Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari met with the injured officer and called the violence a “mob attack.” He said the incident shows a lack of safety for citizens in Bengal and noted that the officer was targeted despite being a government worker.
The case highlights rising security concerns in West Bengal and the need for swift law‑enforcement response.
