West Bengal Education Minister Points Finger at Governor Over Jadavpur University Student Drowning
In a heated statement, West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu has indirectly held Governor C.V. Ananda Bose responsible for the tragic drowning of a third-year English literature student at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University. The incident happened on Thursday night inside the campus, and Basu blames poor security setups for the mishap.
Speaking at a public event on Saturday, Basu didn’t name the Governor outright—but everyone knows the Governor serves as Chancellor for all state universities in West Bengal. He pointed out that ongoing clashes between "someone" and the state education department have left Jadavpur University without a full-time vice-chancellor. Instead, it’s been running on an interim one, stalling key decisions like beefing up campus security.
"Things ran smoothly when we had a permanent vice-chancellor," Basu said. "But then, a top state university like Jadavpur was left without proper leadership, even while the issue was in the Supreme Court. This created chaos, and now students are paying with their lives."
Basu stressed that without a permanent vice-chancellor, problems like this are inevitable in an iconic spot like Jadavpur University. He called for urgent action: "Jadavpur University needs a full-time vice-chancellor right away to fix these irregularities and prevent more tragedies."
The student’s death has sparked outrage over campus safety at Jadavpur University, one of India’s premier institutions. Basu linked it directly to the leadership vacuum caused by delays in appointing vice-chancellors in West Bengal universities—a hot-button issue between the state government and the Governor’s office.
Not everyone agrees with Basu’s take. Union Minister of State for Education and former West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar slammed the minister for turning the accident into politics. "This is an unfortunate incident, but Basu should support the grieving family instead of playing blame games," Majumdar said.
As investigations continue into the drowning at Jadavpur University, the row over university governance in West Bengal heats up. Families and students are demanding better security, while calls for permanent vice-chancellors grow louder. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
