Police in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district arrested eight people after the kidnapping of local grocery shop owner Lal Chand Mandal in the town of Dom Kal. The arrests took place on Thursday, October 16, and the case links to a long‑standing land dispute.
The first seven suspects were taken into custody in the early part of the day. They are all residents of Dom Kal: Mominul Islam; Suman Mandal; Ajmir Mandal; Iman ul Kabir; Ansarul Ansari; Nayan Sheikh; and Humayun Kabir. Humayun is a civic volunteer stationed at the Dom Kal police post. While being questioned, police learned that a ninth known associate of the late Trinamool Congress MLA Jafikul Islam—Mohammad Ali Mubarak—had played a role in the kidnapping. Mubarak was usually linked to the political office and was taken into custody later that afternoon.
Police seized four vehicles that were allegedly used to move the victim during the abduction. A senior officer from the Murshidabad police district said the investigation is still in progress and that every suspect’s role will be examined.
“The victim has been rescued safely thanks to prompt police action,” the officer added. “We are pursuing a thorough investigation to lay all hands accountable.”
Trinamool Congress Chief, Hajiqul Islam, who heads the local party block, reacted to the incident by stressing that the authorities were actively looking into the matter. “Injustice will not be tolerated,” he said.
The case highlights the tension caused by land disputes in the region, and the police are working to bring those involved to justice.
