Bengal Guv files suit against Kalyan Banerjee over Raj Bhavan weapon remarks

The Governor of West Bengal, C.V. Ananda Bose, has taken the step of filing a lawsuit in the Calcutta High Court against Kalyan Banerjee, a four‑time Trinamool Congress member of Parliament.

The complaint comes after Banerjee spread claims that the state’s Raj Bhavan—the governor’s official residence in Kolkata—is distributing arms and ammunition to “criminals” from the opposition BJP. He told reporters that the governor should stop sheltering these “criminals” before he would allow the Trinamool Congress to continue operating freely.

Bose described the remarks as “inflammatory, explosive and irresponsible.” He warned that he would pursue “strong legal actions” if Banerjee’s statements were false, and demanded a public apology from the MP.

On Monday, the governor ordered a joint search of Raj Bhavan to verify Banerjee’s allegations. The inspection turned up nothing, and the governor rolled back to the court.

Following the search, the Office of the Governor—represented by the officer‑on‑special duty—filed the suit on Tuesday. The case argues that Banerjee’s comments tarnished the dignity of the governor’s office and could stir social unrest in West Bengal.

The lawsuit marks a sharp escalation in the political feud between the Trinamool Congress and supporters of the governor. Observers say the case will test the limits of political speech in the state and could see a judge weighing the fine line between free expression and defamation.
