Kolkata – A second‑year law student from South Kolkata Law College says her father has secured her a spot at another University of Calcutta campus after last year’s shocking rape claim inside the college grounds.
The father told reporters on Tuesday that the student completed the admission paperwork this week and will start classes once the summer holidays end. He declined to name the new school for “privacy and security.”
University of Calcutta’s acting Vice‑Chancellor Santa Dutta confirmed the transfer. “I met her personally and promised full support so she can continue her academic journey,” Dutta said.
The assault happened on the night of June 25. A Kolkata court recently released one accused, Pinaki Banerjee, a guard at the college, on bail. Investigators had initially portrayed Banerjee as a “helpless witness,” but now he faces charges for allegedly staying silent during the incident in the guardroom.
Three other suspects remain in custody: Monojit Mishra, the main accused and a former student who was hired on a contractual basis despite a prior criminal record; Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, who are accused of helping the crime. All three are linked to the student wing of the Trinamool Congress.
The case has sparked widespread outrage, raising serious concerns about campus safety and the college’s administrative responsibility. It also highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures on university grounds across India.
