In Kharagpur, West Midnapore, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has raised a fresh complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI). He says booth‑level officers (BLOs) were introduced onstage at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) event, a move he calls “an assault on free and fair elections.”
Adhikari posted a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing the BLOs—officials who normally ensure impartial vote‑counting—joining the TMC rally. The footage, which the news agency could not verify, shows eight teachers from the 224 Kharagpur Sadar constituency standing beside TMC leader Debasish Chowdhury. The opposition leader claims that the officers were visibly endorsing the ruling party during the meeting.
“Their duty is to protect democracy, yet they’re openly aligning with TMC and Mamata Banerjee’s regime,” Adhikari wrote. He warns that such bias could lead to voter‑list manipulation, intimidation of opposition workers and an unfair tilt in the elections.
Adhikari has asked the ECI to act immediately. He urges the commission to suspend the eight BLOs and ban them from any upcoming electoral work. He also calls for a full investigation into TMC’s influence on local election machinery.
The incident adds to growing concerns over election integrity in West Bengal. As the next polls approach, observers and voters alike are watching closely to see whether the ECI will respond and reinforce the integrity of the electoral process.
