Heavy rain is set to batter south Bengal and Kolkata from Tuesday as a low‑pressure system in the Bay of Bengal intensifies and may become a cyclone.
The Met Office said the low‑pressure area has moved west‑north‑west from the southeast Bay of Bengal. By Sunday it is expected to strengthen into a deep depression, and officials warn that it could develop into a cyclone.
This weather system will push heavy rainfall across the state’s coastal districts and the city of Kolkata starting Tuesday. Early reports from the Kolkata Regional Meteorological Centre indicate that a cyclone could form over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Monday morning. Whether the system makes landfall in West Bengal will determine the severity of the impact.
What to expect
- Monday: South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and neighbouring coastal districts may see rain.
- Tuesday onward: Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, West Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly, and Jhargram are likely to experience heavy rain and gusty winds of 30–40 km/h, along with scattered thunderstorms.
- Wednesday–Thursday: The rain could spread to north Bengal, affecting parts of Jalpaiguri, Malda, South Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar districts.
Meteorologists say the intensity of the rainfall will depend on the cyclone’s strength and its direction. The sea is expected to become rough from Sunday, with wind speeds rising to 60–70 km/h, and possibly up to 80 km/h overnight. Fishermen have been warned not to go out to sea until October 28, and those already far offshore should return by Monday.
Previous conditions in Kolkata show a hot day – a high of 33.2 °C, 1.5 °C above normal – and a warm night seal at 24.8 °C, 1.8 °C over the average.
Residents in the affected districts should stay tuned to local weather updates, keep windows closed, and follow any advisory from authorities to stay safe during the storm.
