In Asansol, a district court on Sunday ordered that Tahsin Ahmed, the son of Shakil Ahmed—co‑president of the Trinamool Congress’s minority wing in West Burdwan—be held in police custody for ten days. Ahmed was arrested Saturday after police traced him near the Chandrachud intersection on National Highway 19. He tried to flee to Jharkhand, but authorities seized gold worth ₹31 lakh from him.
The arrest follows accusations that Ahmed ran a chit‑fund scheme that collected about ₹350 crore from roughly 3,000 people in the industrial township. He promised investors a 14 percent monthly return, equivalent to ₹2.8 lakh on a ₹1 lakh investment over 20 months. However, he vanished on October 15—before the first payment date—leaving depositors unpaid.
As a result, a video posted by Ahmed on social media apologized to the investors for missing the promised deadline. The story first gained public attention when West Bengal’s Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, shared the video in a Thursday post. Adhikari urged the state to arrest Ahmed immediately and called for investigations by national bodies such as the Enforcement Directorate and the Securities and Exchange Board of India. He also demanded that the full amount deposited by investors be returned.
