In a tragic road incident, five young people from Darjeeling district lost their lives or were injured after the car they were traveling in plunged into a ravine near Kurseong on Saturday.
Police say the car was driving on Pankhabari Road in the Tinghumti area when it lost control on a sharp turn. The vehicle fell into the gorge, killing two passengers immediately and injuring three others who were taken to North Bengal Medical College & Hospital.
The victims were residents of nearby villages. The deceased were Sumit Singh from Naxalbari block and Rajesh Paswan from Kotia Jot. Injured passengers were Raj Das and Tarak Biswas from Rathkhola, and Karan Thakur from Kotia Jot.
Authorities were alerted promptly by locals after the crash. Teams from the Kurseong and Garidhura police stations, together with fire brigade units, reached the site and carried out rescue operations. The injured were stabilized and sent to the hospital for treatment.
The incident comes just weeks after a similar accident in the hills post‑Durga Puja, when a car fell into a 50‑meter ditch near Kalimpong, killing four and injuring three. Police are investigating the cause of this latest crash and will release findings once available.
