In Bengaluru, a female engineering student was allegedly raped on campus inside the boundary of the Hanumanthanagar police station. Police reported the incident on Friday after the victim told a friend she had been assaulted.
Police named the accused as 21‑year‑old Jeevan Gowda, a former classmate who had been in the victim’s senior year after failing an exam. Gowda was taken to court and remanded to judicial custody.
According to the police, Gowda invited the student to the sixth floor of the college building. They went to a washroom, and the assault took place there between 1:30 p.m. and 1:50 p.m. on October 10. When the victim resisted, Gowda dragged her into the men’s washroom and forced the attack. He allegedly snatched her phone during the assault and later tried to offer her pills.
The victim had initially confided in friends and, after their advice, informed her parents. She then filed a formal complaint on October 15, which led to the arrest. Police have registered the case under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for rape, and investigations remain underway.
The incident has sparked wider concerns over student safety in Bengaluru’s colleges. R. Ashoka, the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, has written to the National Commission for Women (NCW) demanding urgent action. He pointed out that in just four months, Karnataka has recorded 979 sexual assault cases involving girls, with over 114 reported in Bengaluru alone. He warned that “women and children are living in fear.”
Police are continuing to gather statements, and the case remains a serious reminder of the need for stronger safety measures and swift justice for victims of sexual violence.
