Omar Abdullah Welcomes PM Modi’s Long-Awaited Visit to Manipur
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur, calling it a positive move after a long delay. The trip comes more than a year after ethnic violence shook the northeastern state in 2023.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai on Saturday, Abdullah said, "It’s a good thing. There’s been a lot of talk about how PM Modi avoided that part of the country after the 2023 violence. Better late than never!" He hopes the visit will bring back peace and ease tensions between Manipur’s tribal communities, like the Meitei and Kuki groups. Their conflict, which started in May 2023, has dragged on for over a year, hurting the state’s economy, breaking social ties, and shaking up politics.
This marks PM Modi’s first trip to Manipur since the clashes began. During his visit to Churachandpur, he urged all ethnic groups to drop violence and join hands for peace. Modi shared an optimistic note, saying a "new dawn of hope and confidence" is rising in the state. He also kicked off several development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore to boost growth in the area.
Abdullah’s Take on India-Pakistan Cricket Matches
Shifting gears ahead of the India vs Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup 2025, Abdullah weighed in on cricket ties between the two nations. He has no issue with India facing Pakistan in big multi-team events like the Asia Cup. "Our problem has always been with bilateral cricket matches," he explained. "We don’t mind the multilateral side of large tournaments."
But he pointed out real worries from past events, especially in Jammu and Kashmir. "You can’t ignore what happened. My part of the country has suffered directly. We all saw the Pahalgam incident—these are genuine concerns," Abdullah added, referring to security issues that have hit the region hard.
