Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Inaugurates New SDRF Building in Patna to Boost Disaster Response
Patna, Sep 19: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar kicked off the new State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) building in Dilawarpur, Patna district, today. This modern facility promises to supercharge Bihar’s fight against floods, storms, and other natural disasters.
Joining Nitish Kumar at the event were Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Chief Secretary Pratyay Amrit, plus a bunch of ministers and top officials. It was a big moment for the state’s disaster management team.
In his speech, Nitish Kumar highlighted how the Bihar government has poured efforts into building stronger disaster management systems. "This new SDRF centre will make our teams more efficient with better training and living spaces," he said. It’s a game-changer for the force that steps up during Bihar’s frequent crises.
Launched back in 2010, the SDRF mirrors the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and has been crucial in rescue and relief work across this disaster-prone state. But until now, teams had to travel to other states for training due to the lack of a dedicated setup at home. This new campus fixes that problem head-on.
The sprawling complex packs in everything needed for top-notch operations. Highlights include an administrative building and a 500-seat auditorium for big gatherings, a training centre for up to 290 trainees, and a special unit for 30 rapid response soldiers. There’s even a national-level swimming pool tailored for flood-relief drills—perfect for Bihar’s monsoon challenges.
Living quarters are no afterthought: family housing for 108 officers and 150 staff, barracks for 330 soldiers, a mess hall, and dedicated residences for the commandant and deputy commandant. It’s all designed to keep the team sharp and ready.
Officials say this state-of-the-art SDRF training centre will cut down on outside dependencies, letting Bihar handle emergencies faster. From floods along major rivers to storms and earthquakes, the force can now gear up locally and save more lives.
The first phase—covering the admin building and housing—wrapped up earlier this year. Phase two, with the auditorium, swimming pool, more training spots, and barracks, was meant for June 2025 but got pushed back a bit. Still, it’s a huge win for monsoon readiness, when SDRF teams rush to riversides for rescues, evacuations, and aid to flood-hit villages.
With these upgrades, Bihar’s SDRF is set to tackle disasters more effectively, ensuring quicker help reaches those in need.
