Patna, Oct. 19 – The Bihar Assembly elections are shaping up to be a hard‑bargaining contest, but the main opposition, the Grand Alliance, has yet to agree on who will run where. Without a seat‑sharing pact in place, rival parties could end up fighting each other in a dozen or more seats.
The alliance, made up of the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the CPI and CPI(ML), and the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), has not published a formal plan. That means candidates from different parties may still run against one another. For example:
– In Lalganj, RJD and Congress are set to face off for the same seat.
– In Kutumba, RJD has named Suresh Paswan while Congress has backed state president Rajesh Ram.
– The Sikandra contest remains a deadlock between the two parties.
– Warsaliganj will pit RJD’s Anita Devi against Congress’s Satish Kumar Singh.
Reports say around ten seats remain a dispute, as the alliance struggles to reach consensus. Insiders estimate that at least eight contests could turn into friendly fires if no agreement is reached.
Meanwhile, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has announced it will contest on its own, targeting six seats across Bihar. The JMM’s independent run adds another layer of complexity to the already crowded field.
The nomination process for the first phase of the January 6 election, covering 121 assembly seats in 18 districts, closed on Friday. The Grand Alliance finished the nominations without finalizing seat allocations. RJD, the biggest party in the group, still has not revealed its full list of candidates.
Congress has filed 54 candidates, while CPI(ML) has submitted 20 – one more than the 19 it entered in 2020. The second phase of nominations is already picking up steam as the election dates approach.
To recap, Bihar’s assembly elections will swing into action on November 6 for the first phase, with the second phase on November 11 and results counted on November 14. With the Grand Alliance still scrambling to settle seat sharing, voters can expect some unpredictability in key constituencies.
