Indian voters in Bihar get a calendar for the 2024 assembly polls. The Election Commission set up 243 seats for two voting days: 6 November and 11 November, with vote counting on 14 November.
The Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, also confirmed a nationwide “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) of voter lists. SIR cuts out duplicate names and those who cannot vote, and the final updated list will be released after nominations close. Bihar’s voters helped clean up the register, and the ECI says the list is now final.
BJP leaders rang the campaign bells. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s National Democratic Alliance faces a fight on development, with BJP‑led politicians Amit Shah and JP Nadda welcoming the dates. “We are confident that Bihar will choose the politics of progress,” Shah wrote on X, stressing that the NDA’s work has lifted the state from “Jungle Raj.” Nadda called the polls the greatest celebration of democracy and urged voters to keep the nation on a growth path. BJP’s state president Dilip Jaiswal echoed the message, saying the alliance is united and prepared for a fair election.
Opposition voices added tension. Congress chiefs Pawan Khera and Rashid Alvi questioned the Election Commission’s integrity, pointing out what they see as a controversial focus on “infiltration” claims that left them without concrete names. “The Commission can’t be trusted to hold free and fair elections,” Khera said. Meanwhile, the INDIA alliance—led by RJD, Congress, CPI‑ML, CPI, CPM, and VIP—expressed optimism about breaking two decades of NDA rule. Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi and JMM’s Mahua Maji called for a new era of governance, urging voters to choose change.
The contest will pit the NDA (BJP, JD(U), Lok Jan Shakti, Hindustan Awami Morcha, RLSP) against the INDIA bloc and a newcomer, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj party. In 2020, the RJD won 75 seats and the BJP 74, and the new players could swing the balance.
What matters most: over 20 million voters will decide whether the NDA—or a new coalition—will lead Bihar on 14 November. The election promises a hotly contested race, with every vote counting toward the future direction of the state.
