Police in West Bengal’s Malda district on Monday arrested a woman from Bihar who was found in possession of a huge drug shipment worth about ₹1.5 crore. The suspect, Kanchan Devi of Bhagalpur, was taken to the local police station after police caught her loitering near a busy crossing in Kaliachak.
When officers searched her handbag, they discovered 1.34 kilograms of banned “brown sugar,” a form of amphetamine. The drugs were allegedly slated for transport back into Bihar, raising alarms about a cross‑state smuggling network operating out of Malda.
Kanchan Devi was brought to the district court the same day and was remanded to police custody. Investigators plan to keep her under interrogation to trace the other members of the ring. In her first statement, she admitted that she had been hired to collect the shipment in Malda and deliver it to Bihar.
Police sources say the Baishnabnagar Police Station was alerted on Sunday about a planned large‑scale narcotics run out of the area. An investigation began immediately, leading to the arrest at the crossing.
Authorities say Malda is a known hub for inter‑state drug trafficking and that this case could expose a broader smuggling operation. The ongoing investigation will look further into Kanchan Devi’s links and the network that may be behind the ₹1.5‑crore drug consignment.
