Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik shared his heartbreak on Sunday over the deadly Karur stampede in Tamil Nadu, where 39 people lost their lives. In a post on X, Patnaik wrote that he’s deeply saddened by the tragedy at a political rally in Karur and offered his thoughts and prayers to the grieving families. He also wished a quick recovery to those hurt in the chaos.
The stampede happened on Saturday during a rally by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, led by popular actor Vijay. Crowds surged forward in the excitement, leading to the heartbreaking loss of lives and injuries to dozens more. Officials say the incident has shaken the community in Karur, Tamil Nadu, highlighting the risks at large public events.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin responded quickly to the Karur stampede tragedy. He announced Rs 10 lakh in compensation for each victim’s family and Rs 1 lakh for those receiving hospital treatment. To get to the bottom of what went wrong, Stalin set up a one-member Commission of Inquiry. Retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan will lead it and report back to the government soon.
State Director of Medical Education Suganthy Rajakumari gave an update on the victims. She told reporters that hospitals received 39 bodies and treated 52 injured people. Two patients remain in critical condition, hooked up to ventilators. “We’ll complete all postmortems and hand over the bodies to families by noon today,” Rajakumari said. The government is also providing accommodation, food, and other support to those affected by the Tamil Nadu stampede.
