A lawyer tried to throw a shoe at India’s chief justice at the Supreme Court this week, but the court’s registry decided not to press charges. Delhi Police released the 71‑year‑old Rakesh Kishore after questioning him for three hours. The incident sparked sharp criticism from across the political spectrum.
BJP MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi called the act “highly condemnable” and said it hurt every Indian. He said it undermines the dignity of constitutional posts and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his outrage. Trivedi praised Chief Justice BR Gavai for staying calm and “unflinching” in the face of the challenge.
Congress MP K C Venugopal slammed the “unprecedented” attack, describing it as a blow to the judiciary itself. “It shows a severe decline in law and order,” Venugopal said. He warned that an attack on the Chief Justice is an attack on the entire constitutional framework.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also condemned the incident, questioning whether being a Dalit should be a crime. “Attacking the CJI undermines the pillars of our Constitution,” he said, dismissing the idea that “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” can protect against such violence.
The lawyer’s motive appears linked to Chief Justice Gavai’s recent dismissal of a plea to restore a seven‑foot‑long beheaded statue of Lord Vishnu at the Javari temple in Khajuraho. While being escorted out of the court, Kishore reportedly shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge Hindustan” (“Hindustan will not tolerate insult to Sanatan”).
The Delhi Police released Kishore after the Supreme Court registry decided there was no case to indict. The incident underscores ongoing tensions in India’s legal and political landscape, raising concerns about the safety of judicial officials and the integrity of the nation’s constitutional institutions.
