The West Bengal BJP has lodged a formal complaint against a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor in the Uttarpara area of Hooghly district after the councillor made remarks that the party says were “insensitive” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The complaint was filed at the local police station in Uttarpara.
The trigger for the complaint was a comment Arnab Roy, a TMC councillor with the Uttarpara municipality, posted after Mr. Modi’s social‑media message condemning an attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh. The two BJP leaders were attacked while going to meet flood‑affected residents in North Bengal.
Prime Minister Modi blamed the attack, and the BJP said that the councillor’s words could not be tolerated. “The Prime Minister of the country cannot be spoken to in that language,” state BJP chief Krishna Bhattacharya said, adding that the councillor should be arrested.
Arnab Roy defended his comment. He said the issue was about relief supplies in flood areas being taken away repeatedly and that public anger can erupt if help is not provided. “Those who are speaking against me do not understand English properly,” he wrote. “If you translate it into Bengali, my point was that relief for flood‑affected areas gets snatched away many times.” He also said the BJP was turning a small issue into a big one.
TMC’s Uttarpara president, Indrajit Ghosh, urged all parties to stop making loose remarks. “Even the Chief Minister has been attacked in bad language,” he said. “The Prime Minister should have called the Chief Minister instead of blaming the TMC for the incident in North Bengal.”
The incident with the BJP leaders occurred in Nagrakata, a town in Jalpaiguri district, where Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh were on their way to distribute relief materials to people hit by landslides.
This clash highlights the tensions between West Bengal’s two main parties, the BJP and Trinamool Congress, amid a backdrop of natural disasters and political conflict in the region.
