India celebrated Dussehra with vibrant festivities on Thursday, as leaders from across the political spectrum shared warm wishes for the Hindu festival marking the triumph of good over evil. In New Delhi, BJP leader Smriti Irani dove right into the joy of the occasion, performing the traditional Dhunuchi Naach at a Durga Puja pandal on Pandara Road.
Speaking to reporters, Irani extended her heartfelt greetings to everyone in the country. “On this auspicious Dussehra, I wish prosperity for every family, good health for all, and a secure future ahead,” she said. “That’s my prayer to God today.”
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also joined the celebrations, emphasizing how righteousness always wins out—just like in the festival’s core story. She highlighted the massive Luv Kush Ramlila at the Red Fort, one of Delhi’s biggest annual events. “Millions flock here each year to see the grand portrayal of Lord Rama,” Gupta told reporters. “It’s a true symbol of divinity and splendor. I’m thrilled to be part of it. Heartfelt Vijayadashami greetings to all Delhi residents.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed these sentiments in a post on X (formerly Twitter), calling Vijayadashami—another name for Dussehra—a powerful reminder of truth and goodness defeating evil. “May this sacred day inspire us all to walk the path of courage, wisdom, and devotion,” he wrote. “Warmest Vijayadashami greetings to my fellow countrymen and women.”
Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, holds a special place in Hindu traditions across India. It commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, standing for the win of righteousness over arrogance. Families and communities celebrate in colorful ways, from staging Ramlila plays to the exciting climax of burning effigies of Ravana, his son Meghnad, and brother Kumbhkaran. This year, the festival brought people together in unity and hope.
