BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi’s Punjab Flood Visit as ‘Dramatics’ and ‘Photo-Op’

In a sharp attack, BJP leader Tarun Chugh hit out at Congress chief Rahul Gandhi over his recent visit to flood-ravaged areas in Punjab. Just a day after Gandhi’s trip, Chugh called him out for acting like a "papu" – a childish figure – instead of stepping up responsibly. This comes amid ongoing Punjab floods that have devastated thousands along the Indo-Pak border.

Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, faced off with Punjab Police during the visit. He tried to cross a barbed fence in a flooded zone, but security stopped him. Chugh criticized this move, saying Rahul should have shown maturity in such a sensitive, waterlogged area. "With so many people suffering from the devastating floods, Rahul Gandhi could have announced real relief aid," Chugh said in a statement. Instead, he accused Gandhi of turning the trip into mere dramatics, which only embarrassed Punjab’s flood victims.

Chugh also pointed fingers at Gandhi’s habit of ignoring security rules. He noted that Rahul often makes private trips – both in India and abroad – without informing central agencies. Praising the Punjab Police for standing firm, Chugh urged the opposition leader to respect security protocols, especially since he holds a key constitutional role. "After his secret foreign visit, Rahul landed in Punjab just for a quick photo-op, pretending to care for stranded families," Chugh added.

The criticism didn’t stop there. Another BJP figure, Pritpal Singh Baliawal, took a dig at Congress-led states for their selective flood relief efforts. He highlighted how Karnataka’s government, under CM Siddaramaiah, sent Rs 5 crore to flood-hit Himachal Pradesh – another Congress-ruled state – to support relief and rehabilitation. Baliawal posted on X (formerly Twitter): "Rahul heads to Punjab for photo-ops, but financial help flows to Himachal. Funny, right?"

He questioned why none of the eight states run by Congress or its allies offered aid to Punjab. "Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring should ask Rahul what he actually brought for the people," Baliawal said. "Who’s really anti-Punjab – those providing flood relief or those chasing cameras?"

Siddaramaiah had announced the Karnataka aid package to show solidarity with Himachal’s flood victims, but BJP leaders see it as favoritism among Congress states. As Punjab grapples with flood recovery, the political spat highlights growing tensions over relief efforts and leadership in crisis-hit regions.
