Two senior leaders of the BJP – national general secretary B. L. Santhosh and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra – arrived in Imphal on Wednesday. They were in town for a series of meetings with party officials and state MLAs, sparking talk that a new government could be formed in Manipur. The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13 after months of ethnic clashes and violence.
Santhosh and Patra flew into Imphal and immediately hit the ground in the state’s party headquarters. State BJP president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi chaired a large meeting with office‑bearers, spokespersons, district and mandal presidents. The main focus was to iron out organisational changes, improve coordination, and widen grassroots outreach. Another anonymous source said the leaders will spend the next three days visiting community groups to hear the public’s concerns and will later share a detailed report with the party’s national team.
Closed‑door talks with MLAs who had backed former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s government are also on the agenda. The meetings will cover leadership options, possible realignments, and whether an interim government can be set up before the 2027 assembly elections. A separate round‑table at a hotel in Imphal brought together BJP leaders and local personalities to discuss the state’s socio‑political challenges and ways to push Manipur’s growth and harmony forward.
Last month, 26 BJP MLAs, including Biren Singh, met Santhosh and Patra in New Delhi and urged the party to ‘install a popular government’ in Manipur. Biren Singh, who resigned on February 9 and left the seat four days before President’s Rule began, says the party members in the state remain united in building a new government. He has avoided commenting on individual political views but stressed the need for a stable government to address humanitarian issues.
The former chief minister highlighted the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in relief camps, calling for urgent action to improve their living conditions. “The public and our side demand that we handle the problems of displaced families. These can only be resolved if a popular government is formed,” he said. He added that once an elected administration takes office, the state’s top priority will be the welfare of IDPs and the broader population.
