In Srinagar, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced three names for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election set for October 24. BJP put forward Gulam Mohammad Mir, Rakesh Mahajan and current J‑K state president Sat Paul Sharma as its candidates.

Sharma has led the party in the region twice – first from 2015 to 2018 and now for a second term. He also served in former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s cabinet back in 2018. Mahajan, the BJP vice‑president in J‑K, brings strong local influence, while Mir had run as BJP’s candidate in the 2023 Handwara Assembly seat, though he lost to National Conference’s Sajjad Gani Lone.

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) has also picked its own contenders. The party named Chowdry Mohamad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo and Shammi Oberoi. They say a fourth candidate will be announced shortly, and JKNC president Farooq Abdullah will stay in the state for the time being.

All four Rajya Sabha seats were open since February 2021, after the former members Ghulam Nabi Azad, Mir Mohammad Fayaz, Shamsher Singh and Nazir Ahmed Laway retired.

The election will decide who represents Jammu and Kashmir in the upper house of Parliament. The decision could shape the region’s political direction in the coming years.
