In Guwahati on November 5, former Union Minister and four‑time Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain joined the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and immediately fired a shot at the ruling BJP in the state. “The BJP is running a Hitler rule in Assam,” he said, aiming a jab at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Gohain criticized the party’s handling of the state, saying the BJP has broken the Assamese people into pieces through the delimitation process. “We expected a national party like the BJP to work for the Assamese people, but instead we see loot and our resources being handed to outsiders,” he added.
He praised the Congress leadership, especially Rahul Gandhi, noting the party’s vigilance against vote manipulation. “Good people in Congress can strengthen the party,” he said, and urged the AJP to consider an alliance with Congress ahead of the next Assembly polls.
Gohain, once a key BJP loyalist in Assam, quit the party on October 9 due to “growing discontent” with its direction. At the hand‑over ceremony in the PWD Auditorium in Guwahati, he pledged to serve the people with sincerity. “I have always performed my duties with honesty and commitment, and I will continue to do so here,” he promised.
“The BJP has drifted far from the ideals of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and veteran leader L.K. Advani. We did not join a party to witness personality‑driven politics,” Gohain said, expressing deep disappointment with its current functioning.
The AJP welcome ceremony was attended by senior leaders Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Chitta Basumatary, and Jagadish Bhuyan. The political shift highlights looming changes in Assam’s political landscape, as key figures realign ahead of the upcoming state elections.
