BJP slams Rahul Gandhi over Colombia remarks, accuses him of 'praising China, insulting India'

BJP leaders fired sharp criticism at Congress’s Rahul Gandhi on Thursday over comments he made during his trip to Colombia. They accused him of tarnishing India’s image abroad and showing too much favoritism toward China.

Senior BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad led the charge at a press conference in New Delhi. He called it disappointing that Gandhi skipped sending greetings to Indians on the festive day of Vijayadashami and instead chose to bash the country overseas.

“Rahul Gandhi is traveling abroad. He could have wished people back home on Vijayadashami,” Prasad said. “But no, he picks this time to run down India.”

Prasad slammed Gandhi for what he described as a pattern of badmouthing India’s democracy. In Bogotá, Gandhi reportedly claimed India lacks real democracy and freedom of speech—statements Prasad dismissed as total nonsense.

“If Rahul Gandhi keeps saying this stuff overseas, he’ll lose the people’s trust at home and struggle to win even a single seat,” Prasad warned.

He pointed out the irony: Gandhi freely attacks Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP in India, yet complains about no free speech. “Rahul Gandhi hurls insults at PM Modi without a second thought. He slams the BJP and the prime minister more than anyone, but now he says there’s no freedom? Come on.”

Prasad also took aim at Gandhi’s praise for China. “Now he’s saying India can’t rise as a global power, but China can. It’s clear he has a soft spot for China and loves knocking India at every chance.”

To counter that, Prasad highlighted India’s booming economy. The country now ranks as the world’s fourth-largest, with sights set on third place soon. “We strongly denounce Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing efforts to downplay India’s global rise abroad,” he added.
