BJP leaders and workers marched through Kolkata on Sunday, led by state opposition chief Suvendu Adhikari. The rally targeted the West Bengal government over a spate of electrocution deaths that have shocked the city.
Adhikari blamed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for holding the Durga Puja carnival on the same day that northern Bengal was hit by mountainous rain, landslides, and at least 20 deaths. “People died from exposed wires in water‑logged streets,” he said. “The CM should have postponed the carnival and even stepped down.”
The protest was organized by Khola Haowa, a cultural wing of the BJP in West Bengal. After police refused permission, the group asked the Calcutta High Court for clearance—a request the court granted, letting the rally proceed from College Square to Esplanade.
BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya joined the criticism, saying the CM was “insensitive” for attending the carnival while tragedy unfolded in the hills. He warned that the TMC’s response was poorly timed.
In reply, Trinamool Congress (TMC) deputy secretary Kunal Ghosh called the BJP’s attacks “cheap politics.” He added, “The BJP has no real agenda but to attack the government over an event under global scrutiny.”
The Durga Puja carnival still goes on, with about 116 award‑winning committees participating. Despite the clash, celebrations continue as citizens try to move past the recent tragedies.
