BJP’s Key Workshop for MPs: GST Reforms Take Center Stage Ahead of Vice Presidential Election
New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) kicked off the second and final day of its two-day workshop for party MPs on Monday at the GMC Balayogi Auditorium in the Parliament House complex. This comes just before the high-stakes Vice Presidential election, and all BJP MPs have been asked to join the session from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The goal? To give them strategic tips and align everyone on the party’s key messages for the big vote.
The workshop builds on an exciting Sunday session, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised everyone by showing up and sitting in the back row with his fellow MPs—a rare move that highlighted his down-to-earth style. During that first day, the MPs unanimously passed a resolution backing the Centre’s major Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms. These changes, approved by the GST Council on September 3, mark one of the biggest updates to India’s indirect tax system since GST launched in 2017.
Under the new GST structure, things get simpler with just two main slabs: 5% and 18%. Sin goods, like tobacco and alcohol, will face a steeper 40% rate to discourage their use. Officials say this revamp will boost disposable income for everyday Indians, sparking more spending and fueling economic growth across the country.
Good news for households—these GST reforms make essentials more affordable. Items like groceries, footwear, textiles, fertilisers, and even renewable energy products will now fall under lower slabs. Many goods previously taxed at 12% or 28% have shifted to these two main categories, easing the burden on middle-class families.
This move delivers on PM Modi’s promise from Independence Day to lighten the tax load on the middle class. As India eyes stronger economic growth through these GST changes, the BJP workshop ensures its MPs are ready to champion these reforms in the lead-up to the Vice Presidential election.
