Chennai police jumped into action Sunday after a hoax bomb threat targeted the East Coast Road home of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Joseph Vijay in Neelankarai. Officials say the call came in claiming a bomb was planted at the residence, prompting a swift response from officers and a bomb disposal squad. Teams are now combing the area inside and out for any dangers, with heavy security visible around the property.
This alert comes amid fresh heartbreak from the deadly stampede at Vijay’s campaign rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The death toll has climbed to 41 after 65-year-old Suguna from Karur district lost her battle on a ventilator in the ICU. Among the victims: 18 women, 13 men, five young girls, and five young boys. Most—34—hailed from Karur, with others from Erode, Tiruppur, Dindigul, and Salem districts.
The chaos erupted Saturday evening when a massive crowd at the TVK event turned into a panic, thanks to severe overcrowding. Dozens fainted and needed urgent hospital care, turning a lively political rally into a nightmare.
Vijay, deeply affected, pledged immediate help: Rs 20 lakh for each family mourning a loss and Rs 2 lakh for those injured in the Karur stampede tragedy.
Adding to the tension, the Madras High Court took up an urgent petition Sunday afternoon to halt TVK’s public gatherings, rallies, and meetings until a full probe wraps up. The filer warned that more big events without fixes could lead to another disaster, urging the Tamil Nadu government to investigate thoroughly first. Justice N Senthilkumar heard the case at 4:30 p.m.
Tamil Nadu leaders didn’t hold back on the grief. Chief Minister MK Stalin, opposition head Edappadi K Palaniswami, and even Union figures called for tough steps to avoid future stampedes. The state has already kicked off an official inquiry, with top cops and officials digging into what went wrong.
In a bold move, Vijay himself filed a plea in the Madras High Court Sunday, pushing for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or Special Investigation Team (SIT) to lead the Karur stampede probe, aiming for answers on the nearly 40 lives lost.
