Imagine the thrill of spotting a rare black tiger in the wild—now that very creature is stealing the spotlight on the cover of National Geographic’s October issue! This stunning feature hails from Odisha’s Similipal National Park, home to these elusive black tigers that are found nowhere else in the world.
The story, called “The Tigers Who Changed Their Stripes,” dives into the mysterious lives of Similipal’s black tigers and spotlights the Odisha Forest Department’s tireless work in tiger conservation and relocation. National Geographic Explorer and photographer Prasenjit Yadav spent days tracking these majestic animals deep in Similipal’s forests. His breathtaking photo of a black tiger padding silently along a mossy jungle path clinched the cover spot.
Yadav got full backing from the Odisha Forest, Environment and Climate Change Department, and he couldn’t stop raving about Similipal’s stunning landscapes, its warm locals, and those one-of-a-kind black tigers. “I was deeply touched by it all,” he shared, thanking the team for their support.
This global shoutout is set to skyrocket Odisha tourism, drawing wildlife lovers from around the world to explore Similipal Sanctuary and its treasures. Odisha Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia couldn’t be more excited—he pointed out that black tigers exist only here, and this exposure could open up exciting new opportunities for visitors.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi celebrated the news on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a joyous moment. “Seeing the elusive black beauty of #Similipal on the cover of @NatGeo magazine fills me with pride,” he wrote. He also congratulated Yadav, who’s making history as the first Indian to both write and photograph a National Geographic story centered on India.
For Odisha, this isn’t just a magazine feature—it’s a game-changer that puts the state’s unique wildlife conservation efforts and natural wonders on the map for millions. If you’re into tigers, adventure travel, or Odisha’s hidden gems, Similipal is calling your name!
